There are over four thousand Pagodas and Temples in Bagan and of these there is a Saying
" Dhammayan for Mass , THabyinnyu for Height , Ananda for Grace and Shweaingon for Beauty". In Keeping with this saying all of the best and most delicate works of art can be found in the Ananda Temples.The original title of the temple was
Nandamu Hlaing Gu ( The Nandamu Cave ) and it is also said that ' Anan' evolved over time to Ananda. " Ananda" means ' Very beautiful' in Sanskrit. Of the ten kinds of traditional arts and crafts eight of them are present altogether in this pagoda. The eight kinds of arts and crafts are:
Pan Tamawt- Stone Sculpture
Beautiful and proportionate stone sculptures are to be seen in the arched niches on the walls on both sides of the inner corridors. They consist of 80 scenes of the Jatakas and Buddha images preaching sermons or in other postures and positions. There are eight scenes from the Buddha's life and from his sojourn in 7 places each just after enlightenment.
